Realtime Usage Statistics

October 25, 2008 @ 1:17 pm

The activity on the site has started to pick up slightly this month so I’ve decided to take a look at some usage data. Along with Google Analytics I also track site usage in-house using a low scale PHP/JavaScript tracking system I started but never made fully functional for users. It does now however let me interface directly with the tracker and give me summary information for the site.

I’ve linked statistics the page on the top navigation under the ‘Realtime Usage Stats’ text. Go check it out if you care.

It’s not surprising that the majority of my users are Windows and Mac users (About 91%) but I was surprised to find the majority of Mac users are also using Firefox (About 17% Mac+Firefox versus 10% Mac+Safari). I figured it would be Safari on Mac mostly.

The vast majority of my users (About 99%) are high resolution users. When I designed this site a few months back I designed it to look good on small monitors and that may change in the future if I can provide better content for larger resolutions but still have a functional site at low resolutions.

It’s interesting that the majority of my Linux users are using Ubuntu. I suppose that’s one of the easier versions of Linux to install though. Given the small sample size it’s hard to tell either way though.

I love usage statistics. I’ll write more about this down the road as I have more data to work with.
